Ketoconazole

What condition does Ketoconazole treat?

Ketoconazole is an oral antifungal medicine used for the treatment of fungal infections and Cushing’s disease. This is mostly recommended by many doctors since it is capable of stopping the growth of the fungus. It blocks the formation of cortisol in the adrenal glands and treats Cushing’s disease. This is an FDA-approved prescription that comes as a tablet.

How does Ketoconazole work?

Fungal infections happen once attacking fungus proceeds over a part of the body and are disproportionate for the immune system to handle. When fungi invade the body, they can be hard to kill as they can survive in the environment and re-infect the person trying to get better.

Ketoconazole is in the class of medications called azole antifungals. This works by stopping the growth of the fungus. This medicine is not to be used for the treatment of fungal infections on the nails and skin due to the risk of serious side effects and drug interactions.

What is the recommended dosage for Ketoconazole?

Ketoconazole is usually taken once a day, by mouth as directed by your doctor. Each dose may be taken with or without food but taking it with food helps prevent an upset stomach. The dosage and how often you will be taking this medication depends on your condition, response, and other medications you may be taking. In children, the dosage will also depend on weight. For a complete treatment, it may take from several days to several months. Make sure to tell your doctor about all the products you use including herbal products, prescription, or non-prescription drugs.

If you are taking an antacid, take this medication at least 2 hours before or an hour after taking the antacid. Ketoconazole may not be absorbed into the body if taken together.

This medication will work at its finest when the quantity of it in your body is kept at a constant level. Take it at the same time each day to help you remember. If you forget a dose, contact your healthcare provider or doctor for instructions.
